Yesterday we had a half day and went to Lotus Lake. It's a huge man made lake with a lot of temples around it. The temples are really neat to look at, but after a while, they all start looking the same. The lake itself was kind of disgusting because there hasn't been much rain lately. The water level was very low so there was a crane in the middle of the lake scooping silt, there was a dead turtle, and we saw a rat. Linda said this is the tacky part of Taiwan. It was interesting.
Afterwards we went to Kaoshong to have dinner w/ Linda's friend Brian. Kaoshong is the second biggest city in Taiwan (behind Taipei). We had Italian, which was amazing, then we went downtown and walked around the Love River. It was very beautiful. We were extremely tired by the time we got home and then I had to be up early this morning for class.
We've definitely reached superstar status around here. We were in the newspaper the other day with our picture and an article about us. That day as we were walking home from school everyone was EXTREMELY friendly. We stopped at a shop to buy chops (like stamps) and the woman pointed to the newspaper and then offered us half price! A woman yelled Hello Americans as she drove by on her bike. At the school the kids are ALWAYS excited to see us. At first I was like why do these kids keep saying hi, over and over. Then I realized that there are almost 2500 of them and only 6 of us. While it seems like the same classes and the same kids are saying hi, it might be a kid's first time seeing us in the hallway. It's like they've had an "American siting" and it's very exciting. Did I mention we're having a press conference next week?
Another thing I haven't gotten tired of is being told I'm beautiful, haha. They love our light skin and our different colored hair. My curly hair is also something no one here has. As I'm walking down the hallway I hear girls behind me say "She's so beautiful!" People will be driving by in their cars and roll down the window to tell me I'm beautiful. I'm a big fan of that :-)
Later today they've arranged a class for us to learn Chinese yo-yo. We'll see how this goes....I'm not so hott at American yo-yo!
